Both are on Istanbul’s European side. The right choice depends on your itinerary—and the hotel’s exact street matters as much as the neighbourhood name.

Stay in Sultanahmet for Historic Istanbul

The main advantage is simple: if these sights fill most of your itinerary, staying nearby makes the day easier to organise. You can head out for a morning visit, return for a break and continue exploring without travelling across the city each time.
For a two- or three-night stay focused on history, that convenience can be more valuable than a hotel with additional facilities farther away.
Before booking, check the walking route from the hotel to your first planned stop. A property described as being in the “Old City” may cover a much wider area than you expect. Look for steps, slopes and the location of the nearest tram stop, especially if you are travelling with luggage or a pushchair.
Sultanahmet is our preferred base for a sightseeing-led visit. If your ideal evening involves exploring bars and entertainment around İstiklal Avenue, consider whether you would rather stay closer to that area.
Stay in Taksim for Shopping and Evenings Out
Taksim suits visitors who want to combine sightseeing with time around İstiklal Avenue and the wider Beyoğlu district. It is our suggested base when dinner, shopping and evening outings are central to the trip.
The important distinction is between staying near Taksim Square and staying somewhere in the much larger Beyoğlu area. Those descriptions are not interchangeable when you are walking back to your hotel.
Check the exact address, the route from public transport and recent guest comments about noise. If you are a light sleeper, ask which direction the room faces and whether it is above or beside an entertainment venue. A room on a quieter street may suit you better than one directly on a busy thoroughfare.
You can still visit Sultanahmet from Taksim by public transport. Plan your Old City attractions together so that you make one focused outing rather than repeatedly crossing between the two areas.
How to Travel Between Taksim and Sultanahmet
One straightforward rail route uses the F1 funicular and T1 tram:
- Take the F1 funicular from Taksim to Kabataş.
- Change to the T1 tram travelling towards Bağcılar.
- Leave the tram at Sultanahmet.

Allow for walking to the station, waiting and changing lines. Check current service notices before travelling; the most convenient route also depends on your hotel’s location.
Which Area Is Better for Families?
For families, choose the hotel around the activities you expect to do most often. If your days centre on the historic sights, a nearby Sultanahmet hotel can make afternoon breaks easier. If your plans are spread across the city, transport access deserves more weight.
Ask the hotel about the actual room arrangement. “Family room” might mean one larger room, connecting rooms or a room with extra beds. Confirm lift access, entrance steps, breakfast arrangements and luggage storage before making a decision.
Travellers with limited mobility should also check the complete route between the hotel entrance and transport. A short distance on a map does not tell you whether the journey involves a steep slope or steps.
Compare Hotel Value, Not Just the Nightly Rate
Neither area is automatically the cheaper choice for your dates. Compare the same room type and booking conditions, including breakfast, taxes, cancellation terms and any extra-bed charges.
Also consider the cost of moving around. A slightly more expensive hotel near your main activities may be better value if it reduces taxi journeys and makes your days easier.
