Phillip Island in 2 Days: Penguin Parade and Coastal Walks

Spend one night and two days on Phillip Island if you want to see the Penguin Parade without driving back to Melbourne after dark. Book the parade first, choose a base in Cowes or closer to the island bridge, and leave the following morning free for a coast walk. Without a car, make the evening return your first transport decision.

Phillip Island Nature Parks said the Penguin Parade recorded 709,673 visits through 29 November 2025. That is attendance reported by the operator, not an island-wide tourism count. Its report also notes sell-out evenings, which is why the parade belongs ahead of hotel and meal reservations if it is your main reason for going.

When to go and how to book the parade

Summer has longer days for the coast, with a later sunset and a later penguin arrival. In cooler months, prepare for wind and rain and use the operator’s calendar to see how early your evening starts. Spring and autumn can be a good compromise for walking, but no season promises calm water or an empty viewing area. Pack a warm layer even on a sunny day.

Buy through Phillip Island Nature Parks and compare the current prices, accessibility details and arrival instructions for the viewing option you choose. General viewing and guided experiences do not necessarily use the same check-in rules. Follow the venue’s no-photography and filming instructions during the parade. Keep your phone away, stay on marked paths and let the animals make their way inland.

Day 1: Cowes, koalas and the Penguin Parade

Check in or leave your luggage, then have lunch in Cowes. If your ticket leaves enough time, visit the Koala Conservation Reserve and walk the boardwalks at your own pace. Check its current hours and admission. This is a separate stop from the parade, so don’t add it if you are arriving late or want a long break before the evening.

Head to the Summerlands Peninsula with the venue’s arrival margin built in. Check where you must collect a ticket or meet a guide, and decide whether to eat before entering. The exit can be busy after the show, so don’t book a tight dinner or rely on an unconfirmed pickup. Save the address of your lodging offline and allow time for the drive back.

Day 2: The Nobbies or Churchill Island

Choose the coast or the farm before setting out

If you are leaving the island that afternoon, pick the stop that matches your route. Allow time for slow traffic on a holiday weekend. A picnic or a short walk can be easier than a timed activity when you are also driving back to Melbourne.

Pick the Nobbies if you want views of the rocky coast. Check the boardwalk and site notices before going, wear a layer against the wind and stay back from barriers. For a different pace, choose Churchill Island and check which heritage activities are operating that day. If you want time on a beach, read the local safety advice and swim only where and when conditions and patrols allow. The surf coast is a different proposition from the bay.

Three common mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying a coach ticket and assuming it covers the evening. Get a written pickup point and time, and make sure your ride accounts for the actual parade finish.
  2. Choosing the beach from a photo. Look at the wind, swell and patrol information on the day. Swap a swim for a short foreshore walk if the conditions are unsuitable.
  3. Packing for Melbourne’s afternoon temperature. Bring an extra layer for the exposed coast, plus a bag you can keep closed while watching the penguins.

Where to stay and how to get around

Cowes works well if you want accommodation and meals close together. Newhaven or San Remo can suit a road trip that continues off the island the next morning. Check the evening route from your hotel, not just the distance on a booking map. The operator’s transport guide says the Melbourne coach does not serve the parade or return after it. Treat the coach as a way to reach Cowes, then arrange a separate evening ride.

Your next step: Choose a parade session, confirm the return ride, then pick one daytime attraction for each day. If you are adding more of Victoria, compare our Ballarat goldfields guide and Bendigo city break, or browse the Oceania travel hub for a longer trip.
